B.C.A.A.S. MEETING MINUTES
January 12, 2006
Dave Brown called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM and asked visitors to introduce themselves. We had close to 50 in attendance. Dave announced that he has been predicting summer and winter weather trends for the last 7 to 8 years with 80% accuracy. Who needs Punxsutawney Phil? He also noted that a lot of astronomical events have occurred in January, including the discovery of Jupiter's 4 largest moons by Galileo, Herschel's discovery of moons around Uranus, the second anniversary of the rovers on Mars, the Apollo 1 fire, and the Challenger disaster.
Saturn will be at opposition on January 27 and will be a good observing target. Berks County Parks want us to have more star parties this year. We may have a trip to Cherry Springs State Park on April 22 as a joint venture with Nolde Forest. The Board will discuss this further.
There will be a Board Meeting on January 26 at 6:00. We will meet at the Arner's Restaurant on Route 61 for dinner.
Barb Geigle announced that Linda Sensenig’s father, Clarence, is in the hospital. He has a compression fracture in his spine. Barb will collect dues in Linda's absence.
There will be a club star watch at the Flying Field on Saturday, January 28 at 7:00.
Barb showed the latest Hubble mosaic of the Orion Nebula. This image was premiered on the Night Sky Network website.
Our speaker was Chuck Kunesh, from LVAAS. His talk was "An armchair exploration of the solar system". It was a comprehensive review of man's study of our solar system, and was enjoyed by all.
Respectfully submitted
